Why I Don't Compete on Price (And Why You Shouldn't Want Me To)
When someone tells me they found a similar crystal for less on a marketplace, I get it. Price matters. But here's what I've learned after time in this business: if I competed on price alone, I'd have to compromise on everything that makes Earth's Connections what it is. And honestly? You'd be the one who loses.
Let me explain why I'm not the cheapest option—and why that's actually a good thing for you.
The Race to the Bottom Hurts Everyone
You might wonder why some of my crystals cost more than what you see on large online marketplaces or from big-box retailers. Here's what many shoppers don't realize: the crystal market has different types of sellers with very different business models.
Wholesalers aren't the problem. Most wholesalers are ethical businesses that source directly from mines in their own countries, offering fair bulk pricing to small retailers like me. These relationships are essential—they allow me to access quality crystals at sustainable prices while supporting responsible sourcing networks. Good wholesalers are partners, not the issue.
The problem is the race to the bottom. Some sellers purchase crystals in massive bulk quantities purely to achieve rock-bottom prices, then list hundreds or thousands of nearly identical pieces with minimal quality control. While this drives their costs down, it often comes at a price—less attention to the quality and energy of individual stones, generic product descriptions, and a transactional approach that treats crystals like commodity widgets rather than unique energy tools.
Then there are tariffs and import costs. Depending on where crystals are mined and where they're sold, tariffs, duties, and shipping costs can significantly impact pricing. A seller in the country where a crystal is mined has a natural cost advantage. A small business like mine, importing crystals and navigating tariffs, customs, and international shipping, has higher base costs—and that's reflected in pricing. It's not about markup; it's about the reality of cross-border trade.
When you support a small business like mine, you're choosing careful curation over mass quantity, individual attention over automation, and a relationship with someone who genuinely cares about matching you with the right crystal—not just making a quick sale. Here's what else gets sacrificed when price becomes the only factor:
Quality gets sacrificed. Dyed stones and glass sold as natural. Treated crystals passed off as authentic. Incorrect identifications that mean you're not getting what you think you're buying.
Ethical sourcing disappears. When margins are razor-thin, there's no room to ask questions about mining practices or labor conditions (see our Ethical Sourcing Page).
Expertise vanishes. There's no time or budget for education, curation, or customer support when you're competing for pennies.
The customer experience suffers. Fast, cheap, impersonal transactions replace relationships and trust.
I could join that race. But I'd have to become a completely different business—one I wouldn't be proud of, and one you probably wouldn't trust.
What You're Actually Paying For
When you buy from Earth's Connections, you're not just buying a crystal. Here's what's actually included in that price:
Curation and Quality Control
I personally select every crystal based on quality, authenticity, and energy. I don't buy bulk lots sight-unseen from wholesalers. I inspect for treatments, dyes, and damage. I verify identifications. This takes time, expertise, and relationships with trusted suppliers—none of which are free.
Ethical Sourcing Standards
I work with suppliers who can answer my questions about where and how crystals are mined. I avoid sources with questionable labor practices. I prioritize sustainability where possible. This costs more than buying from whoever offers the lowest price, but it matters.
Energy and Preparation
Every crystal is cleansed and prepared before it reaches you. I don't just pull items from a warehouse and ship them out. Your crystal arrives ready to work with, not carrying the energy of a dozen handlers and a chaotic fulfillment center.
Education and Expertise
The Crystal Education Hub, blog posts, care guides, Feng Shui knowledge, chakra alignment resources—all of that takes hundreds of hours to create and maintain. You're not just buying a product; you're getting access to knowledge that helps you use it effectively.
Real Customer Support
When you have a question, you're talking to me—someone who actually knows crystals, not a chatbot or a customer service rep reading from a script. That personalized support is part of what you're investing in.
A Sustainable Business
I price my products so I can keep doing this work long-term. I can invest in better inventory, create more educational content, improve your experience, and be here when you come back for your next crystal. Unsustainable pricing means businesses disappear—and so does your ability to trust them.
The Hidden Costs of "Cheap"
Here's what often happens when you choose the lowest price:
- You receive a crystal that's been treated, dyed, or heat-enhanced without disclosure
- The crystal arrives damaged, and there's no real customer service to help
- You're not sure if it's even the crystal you ordered (misidentification is rampant)
- There's no guidance on how to use it, care for it, or integrate it into your practice
- The seller disappears, and you have no recourse if something goes wrong
- You end up buying twice—once for the cheap version, then again for the real thing
Cheap isn't always a good deal.
I'm Not For Everyone (And That's Okay)
If your only criteria is finding the absolute lowest price, I'm not your best option. And I'm genuinely okay with that.
But if you value:
- Authenticity over imitation
- Quality over quantity
- Knowledge over transactions
- Relationships over one-time sales
- Ethics over profit margins
Then you're in the right place.
What You Get Instead of "Cheap"
When you choose Earth's Connections, here's what you're actually getting:
✨ Trust – You know exactly what you're buying and where it comes from
✨ Quality – Crystals that are authentic, properly identified, and carefully selected
✨ Education – Resources that help you get the most from your crystals
✨ Support – Real expertise when you need guidance
✨ Community – A relationship with a business that values you beyond a transaction
✨ Peace of mind – Knowing your purchase aligns with your values
I'm not the cheapest. I'm the option for people who understand that value and price aren't the same thing.
My Promise to You
I will never compromise on quality to compete on price. I will never cut corners on ethics to increase margins. I will never sacrifice the customer experience to scale faster.
What I will do is continue to source the best crystals I can find, share everything I know, support you on your journey, and run a business I'm proud of—one that's here for the long haul.
If that resonates with you, I'm honored to be part of your crystal journey.
With gratitude,
Tamara
